From bed to beach
'The ultimate sleepwear shouldn’t be confined to the bedroom. I want these nightdresses to double up as day dresses, or beach dresses, which is the way I’ve always sourced nighties. Throw a belt around the waist and it’s a dress for the great outdoors. And the same for the pyjamas; a sweet little ensemble that can be worn with sandals to a market on holiday, or just the top in isolation, paired with denim cut-offs in town.’
'I like the notion of ‘bed to beach’ & the more sustainable approach to multi-purpose dressing.'

Q&A with Martha Ward
What was your main design inspiration for the collection?
It was a dream to put my favourite design elements into this collection; my lifelong love for details such as smocking, bow ties and embroidery sit very well in the Bamford range. Keeping it traditional was also a key element (without being too old fashioned), as was pretty, and critically – comfort! Alongside this, the Bamford philosophy on sustainability and ethical guarantee was paramount – doubling up sleepwear to daywear was a must from the start, as was using 100% organic cotton, hand-smocking and hand-pleating elements.
Has this multi-purpose approach to styling always been important to you?
For as long as I can remember I have either worn a nightie as a dress or a dress as a nightie and so I’ve always bought them with this requirement in mind. I didn’t want the collection to be exclusively sleepwear as, ultimately, they are too pretty to be relegated to just bed! Plus, I like the notion of ‘bed to beach’ & the more sustainable approach to multi-purpose dressing. For this reason, the design details were critical as they enable the pieces to translate to daywear, plus the use of a ribbon tie or a little belt to nip in the waist and make it feel less nightie-ish.
Do you have a bedtime ritual or routine that helps you to prepare for a good night’s sleep?
It really is a specific ritual – it’s a hot bath with Bamford B Silent Night Time Bath Concentrate, before falling into a bed layered with quilts with a camomile tea, a few drops of cbd oil, a lavender bag and a really soft and comfy nightie.
What is your favourite memory of the British seaside?
Windswept walks on Northumbrian beaches – some of the best in the whole of the British Isles – with barely a soul in sight and always bundled up in Barbours and wellies. And, whatever the weather, a 99 flake from the ice cream van so stoically poised on the edge of the windy clifftop.
What three items would you always bring with you for a day at the beach?
A homemade generously stuffed baguette for post-swim (never tastes better than slightly sandy and a bit soggy). My trusty Lecia film camera. Extra clothes for layering up (in anticipation of the very changeable English weather). All stuffed into an old basket.
‘I’m so happy to have collaborated with Martha on this sleepwear collection. I have always admired Martha’s style, which evokes fun and femininity, and these items are a reflection of that ethos.’
