Meditation can be a walk in the park. Literally.
Did you know that you can meditate whilst you walk? It is a common misconception that all meditation must be done in a seated lotus position, in an advanced yoga class or even in complete silence. More active forms of meditation can provide an effective alternative to anyone who wishes to reap the benefits of mindfulness, without having to dedicate a long period of time in stillness or alone with one's thoughts.
So, how can we achieve the benefits of meditation through active movement?
In essence, active meditation is any form of movement or activity that keeps you in a sustained meditative state and grounds you in the present moment whilst you are doing it.
Who is active meditation suited for?
This form of meditation is well-suited to beginners who are just starting to explore meditative practices and provides a more accessible form of mindfulness for many. For someone struggling with anxiety or a busy mind, it can be difficult to reach a point of stillness which is the practice of traditional meditation.
Active meditations can also be good preparation for the body to move before it embarks on more disciplined forms of meditation. Therefore it can be equally beneficial for those who are more advanced in their meditation practice, and who wish to further their own meditation journey.
Where can I practice active meditation?
The simplest example could be taking a mindful walk in a local park or any open space: focus on the rhythm of your breathing combined with the pace of your steps; acknowledge the sounds of birds chirping above you or the hum of bumble bees buzzing; take notice of the faint smell of fallen leaves, ripe berries or scented flowers falling on the air.
It could also be achieved when doing a physically demanding task, for instance focusing on a meticulous craft or artistic pursuit.
Most importantly, what do I wear?
It is important to be comfortable in your body whilst you are doing any form of meditation - active or static. Our Wellness Collection has been carefully developed to achieve breathability and comfort without compromising on sustainability.
