FIBRE STORY: WOOL

Wool is a natural, renewable fibre that’s biodegradable, incredibly durable, and kinder to the planet—making it the perfect choice for conscious fashion.

WHY WOOL?

Wool is one of nature’s true wonders—a fibre that’s not only 100% natural but also entirely renewable. It grows back on sheep year after year, with new fleeces shorn for the animal’s welfare. Unlike synthetic fibres, wool leaves no trace in landfills or oceans, as it biodegrades and enriches the soil. Its ability to regulate temperature, whether keeping you warm or cool, makes it ideal for year-round wear. Incredibly durable, wool can be bent 20,000 times without breaking. This longevity in wool knitwear reduces the need for frequent replacements, making another meaningful step towards a happier planet.

RESPONSIBLE WOOL STANDARD CERTIFICATION

The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) is a voluntary certification that ensures wool comes from farms that prioritise animal welfare and sustainable land management. It verifies that farmers follow the Five Freedoms of animal welfare and use methods to protect soil health and biodiversity. Third-party audits ensure traceability throughout the supply chain, giving brands confidence in labelling products as RWS-certified. (source: textileexchange.org

60% of the wool in our Autumn-Winter collection is RWS-certified, upholding the highest standards of animal welfare and responsible farming. This certification underscores our dedication to ethical, sustainable practices that respect both the natural world and the animals in our care. While we’re proud of this milestone, we recognise there is more to achieve. This is an ongoing journey, and we are committed to increasing this to 100% in future collections.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR WOOL

The foundation of any winter wardrobe are beloved knits you can rely on, season after season. But it’s not just about choosing the right pieces—it’s about looking after them, too. We’ve all had a mishap or two with the washing machine, but with the right care, your Bamford knitwear will stay soft, luxurious, and last a lifetime.

Rest between wears: Allow your wool garments to rest for 24 hours, giving the fibres time to recover and maintain their natural shape.

Store properly: After airing, fold your wool knitwear flat to preserve its structure; avoid hanging, which may cause stretching.

Minimise washing: Wool’s natural properties mean it seldom requires washing; simply air or gently steam to refresh.

Washing care: When necessary, hand wash in cool water or use a dedicated wool programme at 30°C with a suitable detergent.

Spot clean: Address any stains immediately to preserve the integrity of the garment, avoiding unnecessary washing.

Dry flat: Lay your wool garments flat on a towel to dry, gently reshaping while still damp to retain their form.

Pilling: Remove pilling delicately using a fabric shaver or comb. Avoid adhesive rollers, which can damage the fibres.
